Supportive Housing, Behavioral Health,
Located on the historic Metropolitan State Hospital campus in Norwalk, the Los Angeles County Care Community is repurposing five decommissioned mental health buildings into a Behavioral Health Campus for transitional age youth experiencing homelessness and co-occurring mental health issues. Originally constructed in the early twentieth century, the buildings are being rehabilitated to provide a continuum of care for at risk youth offering diagnosis, treatment, and interim supportive housing in a garden campus landscape.
The project brings together mental health rehabilitation facilities, interim housing, and permanent supportive housing organized around shared courtyards and outdoor spaces designed to support stability and community.
Omgivning serves as the historic architect to Swinerton, the design build lead, collaborating with the team to guide the rehabilitation of the historic structures and support design strategies that allow the buildings to accommodate new behavioral health programs.
